Muscat is the capital and largest city of Oman. The rocky Western Al Hajar Mountains dominate the landscape of Muscat. The city lies on the Arabian Sea along the Gulf of Oman and is in the proximity of the strategic Straits of Hormuz. Low-lying white buildings typify most of Muscat's urban landscape, while the port-district of Muttrah, with its corniche and harbour, form the north-eastern periphery of the city. Muscat is supposed to host the 2010 Asian Beach Games in December. The relation between the Omani people and the sea is legendary. Throughout history, they were pioneers in crossing the seas and oceans, and played a significant role in the maritime and shipbuilding history. The 18th century witnessed the arrival of the vessel "Sohar" to the City of Canton (China), establishing once more the Omani maritime supremacy.
