Arrow Managing a Descent Profile

Flying a good descent profile is very important as descending early results in flying too long at low levels which reduces terrain clearance (increasing the chances of CFIT) apart from wasting fuel, while descending late results in unnecessary turns and high rates of descent which can lead to an unstabilized approach apart from making the passengers uncomfortable. So what is the best option that neither makes you very low or high during your descent? It is the rule of 3.
