When extending the flaps using the alternate system, the recommended method for setting command speed differs from the method used during normal flaps extension.

In normal operations, when operating in speed intervention or an autothrottle SPD mode, the idea is to minimize thrust lever movement during the approach by timely speed selections. This reduces cabin noise levels and increases fuel efficiency. When flaps are extended, the next lower speed is to be selected just as the additional configuration drag takes effect. Delaying the speed selection causes an increased in thrust while selecting the lower speed too quickly causes thrust to decrease, then increase.

When using the alternate system, since the flaps extend more slowly, it is recommended to delay setting the new command speed until the flaps reach the selected position. This method method may prevent from inadvertently getting into a low airspeed condition if attention to airspeed is diverted while accomplishing other duties.
